1) Go all natural – My hair care routine
I’ve completely stopped using shampoo and conditioner for about a year now. This is because there are many harmful chemicals present in them. Most shampoos have sodium lauryl sulfate which strips your hair strands of the natural oil that is required for your hair. I also realised my hair was falling quite a bit and I wanted to switch to all natural products.
I make my own shampoo paste from Indian herbal powders
I mix equal amount of Shikakai powder, Amla powder and Reetha powder (soapnut). Add water till it forms a paste. I wash my hair with this paste like like how I’d use shampoo. After my hair is half dried, I spray with a serum I made. This is made of half part rose water and half part coconut oil.
I do not use a hairdryer and I try not to use heat as much as possible. But when I do use a heat I make sure I deep condition my hair afterwards. My 2 favourite remedy for deep conditioning is using raw eggs on my hair or aloe vera.
2) Oiling your hair
Oiling your hair once a week is very crucial. This is how I oil my hair.
First of all I make my own oil. In a pan, put coconut oil, curry leaves, fenugreek seeds, dried amla and hibiscus leaves and turn the flame on to low heat for about 5-7 mins. I use a generous amount of oil and massage my scalp for about 5 mins. Don’t forget to apply oil in the ends of your hair too.
I leave the oil on for about half an hour then I wash my hair with my shampoo paste.
3) Yoga for hair growth
I have been practicing yoga with my mother who is a yoga teacher for a few years now. We practice a few asanas which help reduce hair fall and promote hair growth. These are asanas that requires your body to be inverted to increase blood flow and oxygen flow to the head.
Most importantly is Surya Namaskar (Sun salutations) followed by a few asanas like shoulder stand, headstand, hand stand, bridge and mountain.
That's it for today, let me know what your top hair care tips are...
XOXO,
Gittanjali
